New AI Policy

Using artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance invention, creativity, discovery, effectiveness and efficiency in teaching, research, and administration is a strategic priority of the university.  It is also critical that our use AI is consistent with university policies and applicable laws; protects our confidential information, personal information, and restricted research data; and appropriately addresses any resulting risks to the university and our community.

In order to meet these two priorities, the university has adopted a new Policy on the Use of AI Systems.  The policy sets forth three basic requirements related to attribution, accuracy, and non-discrimination.  For certain use cases, AI systems must also be reviewed by a newly-formed AI Review Committee, made up of subject matter experts from the Faculty, Provost, ITS, OGC and HR.

Please familiarize yourself with the requirements of the new Policy on the Use of AI Systems.  The new policy and the  AI Review Committee (AIRC) website have links to helpful information including FAQs, a list of AI Systems approved by the AIRC, the AI System Review Form, and Standards implementing the new policy in the contexts of both administration and research.

(Note: as further described in the FAQ, existing use of AI Systems may continue uninterrupted; the AI Policy will be applied on a go-forward basis and existing systems will be reviewed upon contract renewal or an ad hoc basis.)

Please send any questions that you may have to AI_Review_Committee@northeastern.edu.
